Dedication

I want to dedicate My Life as a Single Mom to my two children, Randy Lowery and Mandy Morrow. My children were never afforded the opportunity to have a dad in their lives, as they were in their toddler years when their father died. I can’t imagine how hard it was on them at times not to have this blessing. Yet never did they complain about the matter.

I am so proud of both of my children. Today, Randy and Mandy have families of their own, occupations they enjoy, and churches they faithfully attend. They have stood by me, loved me, and loved one another throughout the years. I am so proud that God gave to me Randy and Mandy. I am so proud to be called their mom.

Getting Started

I am a “knower.” Whisperings from the Holy Spirit seldom come to my inner ear, so when I heard this is your chance on that late spring Sunday morning, I listened. It was announced that our church was starting a single moms Sunday school and ministry, and the Spirit reminded me of a long-ago promise—a promise I made to God while I was single, that if I should ever marry, I would not forget singles and their pursuit of God’s call on their lives.

You see, the world is very “married,” very coupled up. This is never more real than when you are single. Singles are so busy doing life all by themselves, so you might think they have no one else to please, to discuss or argue with. But a single person also has no one to share the load and burden with. This makes single life different . . . harder in some ways. Single moms are overwhelmingly busy and burdened and sometimes burned out.

Shea Lowery has lived the single mom life since she found herself thrust into widowhood the morning of her husband’s unexpected death. As a mom of two toddlers and with no college education or job, she looked into the mirror of that hospital room and cried out to God, asking, What should I do? God has been answering that question for nearly forty years now. With three college degrees including a doctorate, two successful children with good marriages and homes, and precious grandchildren, Shea has lifelong experience learning to wait on God and move only at His command. She is disciplined and determined, and she’s a willing student of His.

Dr. Lowery continues to be about His work of drawing single moms into God’s presence in practical ways, which she is uniquely able to do. She’s the real deal. Sparkling southern vernacular and all!

God stands at the end of history. He knows the outcome of your life and of your children. He yearns to help be a part of your struggles, joys, and sorrows. He wants to help you raise your kids . . . plain and simple. Here. Now. Today.

God is aware of your unmet needs, and He’s particularly sensitive to you because you hold the future of your own babies in your hands. God knows this, and He cares. It’s clear in the scripture, both old and new, that the woman, the mother, ultimately bears the burden of her children’s earthly futures and their eternal futures. That’s why, as women, He comes to us where we are. You are the provider, educator, and decision maker, and God cares about you and your daily decisions. He’s always been there and will always be there because His character never changes. It is who He is.
